The Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby
Daisy is in an emotional relationship with Tom

Daisy is in an emotional abusive relationship with Tom. One piece of evidence is in chapter one when Nick went over to Tom and Daisy's house. It said, “Did you give Nick a little heart-to-heart talk on the veranda? demanded Tom suddenly." Daisy was talking about her wedding and Tom was getting a little weird. It was like Tom didn't want Daisy to talk about their wedding. He was getting a little paranoid.

Another piece of evidence was also in chapter one. Daisy was saying that Tom broke her pinky finger. Before I could answer her eyes fastened with an awed expression on her little finger.“Look!” she complained; “I hurt it.”We all looked — the knuckle was black and blue.“You did it, Tom,” she said accusingly. “I know you didn’t mean to, but you did do it. That’s what I get for marrying a brute of a man, a great, big, hulking physical specimen of a ——”“I hate that word hulking,” objected Tom crossly, “even in kidding.” Daisy said that Tom had broken her finger but that Tom didn't mean to do it. Tom responded angrily when Daisy said that. Tom is always talking to Daisy in an angry tone or an annoyed tone. Tom is also careless of what Daisy has to say. He usually ignores what Daisy has to say.

The third piece of evidence is when Tom hits Myrtle. In chapter two, Nick goes to a small party with Tom. Nick meets Myrtle and they have a small party. Myrtle comes out at one point shouting Daisy's name and Tom hits Myrtle. Tom broke Myrtle's nose. It said, “Daisy! Daisy! Daisy!” shouted Mrs. Wilson. “I’ll say it whenever I want to! Daisy! Dai ——”Making a short deft movement, Tom Buchanan broke her nose with his open hand. Then there were bloody towels upon the bath-room floor, and women’s voices scolding, and high over the confusion a long broken wail of pain." Another quote is when after Daisy and Tom came back from their honeymoon and Tom started cheating on Daisy with a maid at a hotel. Tom had broken her arm somehow. "A week after I left Santa Barbara Tom ran into a wagon on the Ventura road one night, and ripped a front wheel off his car. The girl who was with him got into the papers, too, because her arm was broken — she was one of the chambermaids in the Santa Barbara Hotel.” I feel like if Tom can hurt both Myrtle and the maid from the hotel, he can also hurt Daisy.

My counterclaim is that Tom isn't abusive with Daisy, he's the best husband Daisy could ask for. My rebuttal is Tom is always trying to put Daisy down. He is always ignoring Daisy whenever she wants to say something. When Daisy does say something Tom almost always replies in an angry or annoyed tone. A piece of evidence I got was from a website called, helpguide.org. They listed signs of an abusive relationship, for example "humiliate or yell at you?, Ignore or put down your opinions or accomplishment?, have a bad temper?" Tom is always talking to Daisy in a mean tone. “He isn’t causing a row.” Daisy looked desperately from one to the other. “You’re causing a row. Please have a little self-control.”

“Self-control!” Repeated Tom incredulously.”

“Sit down, Daisy,” Tom’s voice groped unsuccessfully for the paternal note.”

The conclusion is that Daisy is in more of an emotional abusive relationship with Tom than a physical abusive relationship. There's not really much evidence that Tom physically abuses Daisy. There are signs that show Tom is abusing Daisy emotionally. He's always trying to yell at Daisy. He always replies with an angry or annoyed tone. Tom has physically abused two other women and in chapter one Daisy said that Tom had broken her finger. Daisy is in an abusive relationship but I she doesn't think much of it. In the end she stills stays with Tom.

Happy Place

My happy place is at this park that I go to sometimes. I go there mostly on weekends because it's about a 40 min drive. There's a big hill that you have to get to the top in order to see the lake. To get to the top you climb a lot of stairs. All you can really see is the lake. But far off in the distance you can see a bridge. It's always quiet on top of the hill. All I feel is the light breeze and happiness. I feel calm and relaxed immediately.
